Museo del Prado · 360º digitisation

By REM Experience

We digitise the Museo del Prado's temporary exhibitions through 360º virtual tours, multilingual guided routes and high-resolution gigapixel photography, to preserve its heritage and make it accessible.

Digitising museums and exhibitions opens up new ways to preserve, share and provide access to cultural heritage beyond the physical and time limits of a show. At REM Experience we are digitising the temporary exhibitions of the Museo Nacional del Prado, creating digital experiences that let people keep visiting them once the physical exhibition has closed.

The project turns each exhibition into a virtual space that can be visited from the museum's website, keeping the layout of the rooms, the relationship between the works and the original curatorial narrative. Exhibitions originally designed to stay open for a few months can thus be preserved and revisited later from anywhere.

360º virtual tours for museums and exhibitions

Each exhibition becomes a high-quality 360º virtual tour, designed so that users can move freely through the rooms and view the works in their exhibition context.

The experience offers different ways to navigate. Visitors can explore freely at their own pace, or follow a guided route that structures the visit and leads them to the most relevant content.

Being multilingual also makes the experience more accessible and brings the exhibitions to international users wherever they are.

Solutions of this kind allow museums and cultural institutions to build a living digital archive of their exhibitions and extend their reach considerably.

Museo del Prado · 360º digitisation

Gigapixel photography and top image quality

In a museum like the Prado, image quality is essential. Digitisation has to let people appreciate the features of each work in the greatest possible detail.

That is why the project combines the panoramic images needed to recreate the rooms virtually with very high-resolution photography and gigapixel technology, allowing viewers to zoom in on certain works and see painterly details that would be impossible to make out in a conventional photograph.

This requirement matters especially in exhibitions devoted to major figures in art history, such as Anton Raphael Mengs, where colour, brushwork, texture and small details are an essential part of the viewing experience.

Digitally preserving temporary exhibitions

One of the main values of digitising cultural heritage is its ability to preserve experiences that are, by their very nature, temporary.

When an exhibition ends, the works return to their usual locations and the installation is taken down. Digitisation preserves not only the individual works but the exhibition as a whole: its narrative, the arrangement of the pieces, the relationships between them and the route designed by the curators.

At REM Experience we develop technology for museums and cultural institutions, combining virtualisation, 360º photography, interactive content, 3D modelling and immersive experiences.

Our work for the Museo Nacional del Prado represents a new way of approaching cultural preservation and outreach: turning a temporary exhibition into a permanent digital experience, accessible from anywhere and ready to keep sharing knowledge long after the physical rooms have changed.
