REM develops an advanced quality control solution for Nissan

Nissan Cantabria is taking a step forward in innovation by digitising its quality control, a process developed by our company as winner of the technology challenge the Cantabrian firm set in the latest edition of the Xtela Programme. Both companies presented the results of the project at the Xtela Demo Day, held last April in Santander in front of companies from Spain's industrial and technology sectors and public officials.
New technologies for industry
Nissan Cantabria, a company with more than 100 years' experience in casting and machining cast-iron parts, is fully committed to quality control and saw the need to digitise the system to make its checks even more thorough. At REM Experience we took on the challenge with a clear goal: design a solution that would fully digitise the process, improving efficiency, traceability and the use of the data generated on the factory floor.
The result is a custom application that lets operators record possible defects directly on 3D models, view parts in detail and log incidents with photos, notes and comments. This tool for digitising part quality control saves operators time and makes them more efficient, while giving the company a data record of incidents to continuously reduce waste and implement smart manufacturing to become more competitive.
Impact and benefits of the solutionImplementing this solution will significantly improve the efficiency of the quality control process over the next quarter, with faster and more accurate defect logging, fewer errors and better traceability. It is expected to save 40 hours of manual work a month, and the data generated is ready for future analysis using machine learning and big data techniques. The system is already running in a trial phase, with full use on the factory floor planned next, along with exploring its evolution with artificial intelligence and extending it to other processes or parts.
Xtela Demo Day: a platform for collaborative innovation
The project was presented at the Xtela Programme Demo Day, held at the Bisalia Building in PCTCAN (Santander), an event promoted by SODERCAN and the Government of Cantabria's Department of Industry, Employment, Innovation and Trade. Xtela's mission is to drive open innovation by connecting established companies with technology start-ups to develop projects with real impact on industry.
The Xtela Programme Demo Day was not only a platform for presenting this successful collaboration between our company and Nissan Cantabria; it also highlighted the importance of fostering innovation and cooperation between established companies and start-ups. Events like this help companies look beyond their internal focus and explore outside solutions, gaining access to innovative talent, resources and training, and promoting a culture of open innovation.
This edition showcased winning proposals from previous years and launched the programme's new edition, in which we will take part again with new proposals to help solve some of the 38 challenges set by 19 established companies in Cantabria.
The Xtela Programme, part of the Tech FabLab Project and co-funded by the European Union through the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, has become a benchmark for acceleration and open innovation for Industry 4.0 start-ups in Cantabria. In its first two editions, 29 companies set 42 challenges, attracting more than 280 applications from over 100 start-ups.
Continuous improvement on the factory floor
“Taking part in the Xtela Programme Demo Day has been a very positive experience for REM Experience. Beyond the recognition, it was great to share a collaboration that shows how a start-up and a large company can work together to meet real needs in the industrial sector.
At REM we believe in applied innovation, and this project with Nissan Cantabria reflects that approach well. We have developed a tool that digitises quality control on the factory floor, improves processes and makes data analysis easier, moving towards continuous improvement.
We would like to thank the Xtela team, SODERCAN, the Government of Cantabria and especially Nissan Cantabria for their trust and for letting us be part of this challenge,” says Andreu Florit, our CEO.
REM Experience solutions for industryAt REM Experience we develop technology solutions that transform industry, combining immersive training with state-of-the-art technical assistance. Among our standout offerings are 3D simulators and VR Training programmes, designed to train industrial operators in virtual environments that precisely replicate their real workstations. This training lets people learn by doing, with no risk to production or safety, shortening training times, reducing errors and generating valuable data on individual progress. These solutions have already been implemented successfully in sectors such as automotive, marine and technical inspection.
We have also developed a remote technical support system with augmented reality that lets experts guide operators in real time through interactive video calls. The technician can point directly on screen to what needs to be done, while every incident is logged: what failed, how it was fixed and who fixed it. This not only improves responsiveness and reduces unplanned downtime but also builds a valuable data history for applying machine learning algorithms, anticipating failures and moving towards genuinely efficient predictive maintenance.
