Fábrica del Pilar, Motril · Virtual reality and industrial heritage

By REM Experience

We virtualised Motril's historic Fábrica del Pilar sugar mill with a virtual reality experience that recreates the traditional sugar-making process in 3D to bring the museum space to life.

Virtual reality applied to museums and industrial heritage makes it possible to recover historical processes that can no longer be seen in operation. At REM Experience we developed an immersive experience for the Fábrica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar in Motril, Granada, that lets visitors discover how one of the most important old sugar mills on the Costa Tropical worked.

The Fábrica del Pilar opened in 1883 and for more than a century was tied to an activity that deeply shaped the economy, landscape and society of Motril and its surrounding area: cane sugar production. Today the site is part of the town's industrial heritage and preserves both its original spaces and an important collection of historical machinery.

Virtual reality to bring historical machinery back

One of the main challenges in turning industrial heritage into a museum is explaining to visitors how machines that now stand still used to work.

Even when the original machinery can be preserved and restored, it is hard to understand how it worked just by looking at it. Virtual reality, 3D modelling and digital animation overcome that limitation and virtually bring the factory back to life.

For this project we digitally recreated the production process, showing how the different systems and mechanisms worked together.

Wearing a virtual reality headset, visitors step into an immersive experience where they can watch the machinery running and understand the industrial process as if the factory were operating again.

From growing the cane to producing sugar

The experience does not just show isolated machines; it recreates the entire process of making cane sugar.

The tour begins with the arrival of the raw material at the factory and follows the different stages needed to turn cane into sugar.

Through 3D modelling, industrial virtualisation and animation, users can see how the cane arrived, how it entered the production process, how it was crushed and how the different juices were extracted and treated until the final product was obtained.

The experience thus helps visitors understand how each machine was part of a much larger industrial chain and how the whole complex worked in coordination.

Technology makes it possible to show a process that can no longer be seen physically, but which for decades was hugely important economically and socially for Motril and the whole area.

Virtualisation to interpret industrial heritage

Using virtual reality in museums turns technical and historical information into a far clearer, more visual and intuitive experience.

Rather than just reading about how an old factory worked, visitors can place themselves virtually inside it, watch the machinery move and follow the production process step by step.

The experience helps interpret not only the industrial technology but also the role sugar production played in Motril's history.

For decades, the sugar industry was one of the area's great economic engines and part of the industrial, working and social identity of the Costa Tropical.

Digital museum design and immersive experiences

Virtual reality applied to heritage complements the physical and museographic restoration of the factory.

While visitors take in the original spaces and machinery, technology adds what no longer exists physically: movement, activity, production processes and historical context.

This combination of real heritage and virtual reconstruction broadens the ways the space can be interpreted and creates a far more engaging experience for audiences of all ages.

Virtualisation also makes it easy to explain complex industrial processes and turns a museum visit into an active, educational and immersive experience.

Virtual reality for museums and historical heritage

At REM Experience we develop virtual reality projects for museums, digital museum design, 3D historical reconstruction, machinery virtualisation and immersive experiences for industrial and cultural heritage.

The Fábrica del Pilar in Motril shows how these technologies can digitally recover processes that disappeared decades ago and make them understandable to visitors again.

By combining virtual reality, 3D modelling, animation and industrial heritage, the machinery symbolically runs again and users can understand, visually and immersively, how cane was turned into sugar in an industry that shaped the history of Motril and the Costa Tropical for generations.
