Guara Somontano · AI virtual assistant and immersive experiences

By REM Experience

We created a virtual assistant for Guara Somontano's museum spaces, with multilingual information about its cultural, natural and astronomical heritage, alongside virtual and augmented reality experiences that interpret its restored mills.

Artificial intelligence applied to tourism and museum spaces offers new ways to inform, guide and accompany visitors. At REM Experience we developed a comprehensive digitisation project for Guara Somontano that combines an AI virtual assistant, virtual reality, augmented reality, 3D modelling, gamification and interactive content across three museum spaces linked to the area's food and farming heritage.

The project spans El Moliné in Barbastro, the Torno de Buera and the Molino de Chuaquín in El Grado, three sites where visitors can discover traditional processes related to milling, farming and olive oil production, and which have adopted new technologies to enrich the visitor experience.

An AI virtual assistant to inform visitors

One of the most innovative elements of the project is an AI-powered tourist virtual assistant, available on an interactive totem installed in the museum spaces.

The assistant is embodied by a 3D character designed specifically for Guara Somontano and lets visitors look up information in a more natural, intuitive way.

Visitors can use it to answer questions about the museums themselves, the cultural heritage, the natural surroundings, tourist resources and other points of interest in the area.

The assistant also works in several languages, making information easier to access for visitors from different countries and extending how many people the centres can attend to.

Bringing artificial intelligence into tourist destinations makes it possible to move from traditional static information points to systems that can hold a more flexible interaction, adapted to each user's needs.

Virtual reality to discover traditional processes

The project also includes virtual reality experiences for museums, designed to show processes that are hard to understand just by looking at the objects that survive.

Through immersive environments, visitors can learn how the farming cycles unfolded and how some of the traditional food-processing systems worked.

In the old mills, virtual reality shows the grain-milling process and explains the role each machine played.

The experience thus puts the physical heritage preserved at the centres in context and turns technical information into visual, educational content accessible to every kind of audience.

Augmented reality and 3D modelling of heritage

Augmented reality applied to museums adds a layer of digital information over the objects and machinery in front of the visitor.

To achieve this, we built 3D models of different heritage items and historical mechanisms, so their operation can be shown virtually.

Visitors can understand how certain parts moved, what each element was for and how it fitted into the production process.

This combination of 3D modelling, animation and augmented reality makes it possible to interpret machinery that now stands still without physically altering the original items.

Gamification also makes the experience more active and participatory, which particularly appeals to families, school groups and new audiences.

Food heritage, tourism and new technologies

Each of the three sites offers a window onto different historical activities in the area.

The mills show how grain was processed and milled, while the Torno de Buera, an old olive press, tells the story of olive growing and oil making.

The digital solutions help connect these processes with Guara Somontano's landscape, culture, economy and historical development.

Technology does not replace the original heritage; it provides new tools to understand and enjoy it.

Digitising museums and smart tourist destinations

At REM Experience we develop AI virtual assistant projects, virtual reality for museums, augmented reality for tourism, 3D modelling, gamification and immersive experiences for smart tourist destinations.

The project for Guara Somontano shows how different technologies can come together within a single strategy of digitising and modernising tourist and cultural spaces.

Combining an AI virtual assistant, immersive content, augmented reality and 3D reconstructions creates a more accessible, interactive and contemporary experience.

The result is a new way to discover heritage, in which artificial intelligence, virtual reality, augmented reality and tourism work together to bring the area's history and resources to new audiences and bring new life to museum spaces tied to Guara Somontano's identity.

Two visitors use the Guara Somontano virtual assistant on an interactive outdoor totem, with the town of Barbastro in the background.
The virtual assistant answers questions about routes, heritage and activities from totems installed in the museum spaces and around the area.
